Think back 20 years ago. Getting a knock on the door from your best friend who lived a few houses down, asking if you wanted to play outside, was not out of the ordinary. Now, when someone knocks on the door, your heart skips a beat and you immediately think either "How can I make them think I'm not home?" or "I wasn't expecting anyone. Something bad is about to happen." Picking up the phone and pressing seven to eleven phones, from memory ,is a thing of the past. So what does this have to do with Facebook and their new "and improved" algorithm that everyone is offended by? Conversation.
Facebook's hopes are that while you spend less time on their platform, the time you do spend on there is full of meaningful conversation and not just scrolling and liking posts.
Those of us who remember the days of having phone numbers memorized and having to leave the house to find someone to hang out with, tend to find videos like this hilarious yet sad; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bhel13sDBk. Facebook saw how users were changing their interactions with each other and did us a favor. They want to take us back to the time of "Knock Knock Knock, Can you come outside and play?" rather than "beep beep...Hey, WYD? Movie L8R?" Facebook wants you to have CONVERSATIONAL INTERACTIONS with your friends, family, and favorite pages. So how do you make their new algorithm work for you?
Follow these easy steps to get the people and pages you want to see on your normal news feed:
1) Don't fall for the "Post Hi in the comments to see our page more" posts. You need to post longer comments, one to two sentences.
2) Posts on people's walls. Who knows, maybe "poking" will be brought back from the dead at some point too.
3) Go to the pages that you want to see daily, and change your "Following" settings to "See First" in your news feed and turn notifications on.
Do you have a business page? Think this is going to affect your audience. You are 100% right! Your page and posts are going to be served up to a smaller audience. This will mean a bit more work from you and your team to get your message out. Figure out a way to start conversations on your page, tell your followers how to change their following settings. Need some additional guidance on what to do? Send me an email and let's see if we can get your posts to the top of the news feed.
Facebook realizes that more and more of it's users are wanting to spend less time on it's platform, being one of the top things people give up for Lent or base their New Years Resolutions on. Facebook's hopes are that while you spend less time on their platform, the time you do spend on there is full of meaningful conversation and not just scrolling and liking posts. They aren't trying to work against you or your page, so don't panic. Just learn the reasons and the outcomes and let the system work in your favor.
